I listen to Christian radio on the way to work every day.  Today I caught part of a broadcast that airs from 5:00 to 5:30, all of a program that airs from 5:30 to 6:00, and the first 5 minutes of one that airs from 6:00 to 6:30.

Those of you who know me well, know that when I hear the same thing from multiple sources in a short interval, I usually decide God is talking directly to me – to my needs at that moment.  Such was the case today.

So, buried in the fabric of 3 sermons was a common thread. What is our purpose? Why are we here?

I heard, and have heard before, that we are here to bring Glory to God. I also heard and have heard that we are to Proclaim the Gospel. I heard and have heard that we are on a Journey of Sanctification.

But John MacArthur said it best, I think.  He said that we have all heard that the purest form of flattery is imitation.  He said that if we have a hero, we want to be like that hero. He said that if we are lovers of Christ, if Christ is our hero, then we ought to be acting like Christ. Maybe this only hit me like a ton of bricks, because it seems now so obvious.  It is cause and effect.  I love Christ.  I am not too fond of me most times, but I love Christ. I want to imitate Christ. Christ is my hero.  He saved me from myself, from this fallen world, from the destroyer. Am I supposed to bring Glory to God? As if I could.  Am I supposed to Proclaim the Gospel? Absolutely. Am I on a Journey of Sanctification? Yes, yes, yes.  But am I doing these things out of obedience, duty, or trying somehow to repay a debt that has no price?  Or am I doing these things out of simply imitating the example God gave me?  Jesus made it clear that salvation was simple.  Become a child.  What do children do? How do they learn? They imitate their heros, their parents.

Lord, help me to imitate You, for if I can get my arms around this simple truth, it seems to me that everything else comes naturally.  Amen
